Embracing Metabolic Health: A Holistic Approach for Women in Your Thirties, Forties & Fifties

As someone who has journeyed from my thirties, and forties into my fifties and is now approaching my sixties, I want to share a personal story that I hope will inspire and guide you. I’ve navigated the hormonal shifts, energy fluctuations, and metabolic challenges that many of you are facing right now. I understand the struggles of perimenopause and how they can impact your overall well-being. But I also want to assure you that it’s possible to turn these challenges into opportunities for growth and vitality.
My Personal Journey to Thriving in My Fifties
Looking back on my journey, I’ve realized that embracing a holistic approach to metabolic health was key to thriving in my fifties and beyond. Receiving a diagnosis of precancerous esophagitis in my thirties was a toughie for me. I had had duodenal ulcers since age 12. An avid worrier and stress ball due to a tough childhood left me with digestive issues that resulted in chronic inflammation of the duodenum and esophagus. Turns out the remedy was a pill, yup a prescription. At least that was what the MD told me. Offering me no protocol for healing. So because of the lack of guidance, which I believe he had no idea of, I set out on my own. I never took that pill and instead tackled it from a holistic approach. Little did I know it has resulted in me living my best life in my forties and rocking it well into my 50s. What I needed was a life overhaul. I did just that. With three young children, running a home my own business as an artist and designer I set out. Where it led me was absolute healing, going back to school, and a growing passionate desire to help other women do the same resulting in becoming a board-certified Holistic Health and Integrative Nutrition Coach. Here’s what I’ve learned and how it might help you:
Mindful Nutrition: In my forties, I started paying close attention to my diet. I focused on whole, unprocessed foods, incorporating plenty of fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Healthy fats from avocados, nuts, and olive oil became staples, supporting my hormone balance and heart health. Lean proteins, especially from plant sources, helped maintain muscle mass and support my metabolism.
Joyful Movement: Exercise became a cornerstone of my well-being. I combined aerobic activities, like walking and swimming, with resistance training. This mix not only helped regulate blood sugar and support heart health but also built muscle mass and boosted my metabolism. Finding activities I enjoyed made it easier to stay consistent and positively impacted both my physical and emotional health.
Stress and Sleep: Managing stress and ensuring quality sleep became crucial. Mindfulness practices, deep breathing exercises, and engaging in hobbies I loved helped me manage stress and keep cravings in check. Prioritizing good sleep was essential, as poor rest exacerbated stress and metabolic issues.
Balancing Hormones: The hormonal changes of perimenopause and beyond were challenging. I explored natural remedies and lifestyle changes that suited my body’s needs. Consulting with healthcare professionals who understand holistic approaches provided valuable, personalized support.
Mind-Body Connection: I discovered the profound link between emotional well-being and physical health. Practices like yoga and tai chi not only improved my flexibility and strength but also enhanced my mental clarity and resilience. Engaging in joyful activities helped me maintain a positive mindset and overall balance.
Regular Check-ups: Regular health check-ups became an integral part of my routine. Monitoring key metrics like blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure helped me address any issues early. Working with healthcare providers who value a holistic approach made a significant difference in my journey.
